The unseasonable weather continues to work against us, though there is snow in the forecast over the weekend and into Monday after which it does remain below freezing.

A new member
Earlier this year I received a membership inquiry from a chap who lives in Delaware. He is a long time Smuggs regular who comes up at the end of the season for spring skiing. He insisted on paying his membership dues though I offered to waive them for a one-shot visit. He is keen to introduce himself. I think he will fit right in. He included a Wall St Journal article (At this link if you have a subscription) about our older compatriots including Klaus Obermeyer who is still ripping it up in Aspen at 104. I’ll bring printed copies on Wednesday. Here is his potted bio…
Hello, Kearney Krewe,
Liam has suggested I submit a brief bio before my scheduled visit late march; so here goes:
Fifty years ago my ski pals and I were out west and met a man skiing on the mountain age 80. We were filled with wonder and astonishment; and all remarked we hoped we, too, would be doing the same at that age. I’m now 82 and the last one with the boards and clamps. The others all discarded them years ago. So I am delighted to have discovered smuggs 55+ and look forward to a few days with you.
I mentioned to Liam that at my advanced age I am even reluctant to buy a full tank of gas. But, bubblehead that I am, I just bought a new pair of skis; probably influenced by the aspirational story on the reverse side here. It’s from the “health and well being” section of my newspaper. Speaking of well being, I am offering a caveat to any of you who I may ski with: I’ve had two hip replacements; a shoulder replacement; and am in need of two new knees (which I’ll never get). I have not created any drama in the liftline and am capable of mounting and dismounting; but warn you that I may be a needy companion. E.g., “can someone help with my bottom boot buckle?” because it gets farther away every year.
Hope to see you soon, Christopher Messick
